King Wei of Qi and Tian Ji were both skilled archers who often went hunting together. Tian Ji frequently lost to King Wei, which made him feel disheartened. Sun Bin heard about this and went to see Tian Ji, saying, “Why don’t you use your strengths to counteract others’ weaknesses?” Tian Ji asked what he meant, and Sun Bin replied, “Even though you win now, it is not entirely due to wisdom. If you can employ strategy, you will surely win.”
Following Sun Bin’s advice, Tian Ji sent his weakest horse first, followed by his stronger ones. When King Wei saw Tian Ji’s inferior horses compared to his own fine steeds, he laughed and said, “Do you think sending weak horses against my good ones is foolish? Surely you bring shame upon yourself!” He paid no further attention and ordered his horses to race ahead. Before long, Tian Ji’s weaker horse had pulled far ahead, and only then did King Wei realize something was amiss. He hurriedly urged his better horses to catch up but found it too late—Tian Ji’s stronger horses had already overtaken him and reached the finish line.
Tian Ji rejoiced, and King Wei also expressed admiration. From that day on, King Wei treated Tian Ji with greater respect, while Tian Ji cherished Sun Bin’s wisdom even more.
